Wouldn't it be great if someone was working for you every day to tell the public whatagents do and the importance it plays in the delivery of health care? There is such a person, or shall I say organization the Association of Health Underwriters. Our local chapter, the Modesto Association of Health Underwriters is one of 14 chapters that feed into (CAHU) California Association of Health Underwriters -the state’s largest organization representing the private health insurance industry. CAHU is the only statewide association working solely on behalf of you, the health insurance agent. It provides California’s health insurance brokers and consumers with private sector solutions for health, financial and retirement security, and quality assurance in insurance services.
The California Association of Health Underwriters (CAHU) has been an active participant in debates and discussion about health insurance choices to all Californians. As time has passed, the issues have become more complex and, in many regards, more critical. For this reason, CAHU remains committed to continue to provide dynamic leadership and advocacy for all Californians and its association’s members as the health care landscape continues to shift and evolve from local/state to National concerns.
CAHU provides a unified voice for more than 2,400 health care professionals throughout the state representing more than one million California health insurance consumers. CAHU works to improve its members’ ability to meet the health, financial and retirement security needs of all Californians through
Education
CAHU advances public knowledge for the need and benefit of disability and/or health insurance and the role of the health insurance industry in meeting those needs. It is actively engaged in efforts to reduce the number of uninsured Californians by educating them about the assortment of public and private coverage options available to all Californians, regardless of their employment status or income level.
Advocacy
CAHU has a number of legislative priorities to protect and to ensure that Californians receive fair and comprehensive health care coverage. In addition, CAHU seeks to assure the continued survival of the private health insurance delivery system. It works with state legislators to provide a balanced approach to increasing the number of Californians who have access to health insurance. CAHU was instrumental in working with Senator John Burton and Assemblyman Dario Frommer, the authors of the “pay or play” health care legislation enacted in 2003. Additionally, CAHU has been a strong supporter and co-sponsor to the California Heath Care Matrix which strives to educate Californians about their health care coverage options.
Professional Development
CAHU is committed to providing professional development opportunities to its members through facilitating informative meetings/discussion on a wide variety of topics that impact the insurance industry. CAHU holds discussion forums with the top professionals in the field to provide the most recent information on issues ranging from compliance training to best practices and certification training programs with employee benefits, disability insurance and long term care to name a few.
Please seriously consider becoming a member and helping us change the landscape of our business as it will be anything but "usual" in the near future. By adding your voice with thousands of other brokers as a part of the National Association of Health Underwriters, you can help determine whether health care reform strengthens the role of agents in America’s health care system – or not.
Listen, the House Leadership is pushing for legislation that would create a public health insurance plan to compete with private carriers and an “exchange” to compete with brokers. Yet moderate Democrats are pushing back creating an opportunity for brokers to make our views known and understood in Washington. NAHU’s input is aimed at making sure health care reform recognize and support the role of brokers. Democrats membership provides NAHU with the credibility and resources it needs to stand up for brokers and their role in America’s health care system. Events are unfolding quickly in Congress. Now is the time to add your voice to those of your peers and colleagues. Join MAHU today, become part of a larger group and have a voice in choice.
The future is being shaped today and NAHU’s influence is directly tied to its membership. Be a part of it. Please contact Peter Aughney, Membership Chair for the Modesto Association of Health Underwriters at (925) 324-0955 to learn how you can get involved and when is the next scheduled meeting at the Modesto S.O. S. Club.
